- Rolling with the Punches: Summer 2024A Summer of Surprises This year’s weather has been nothing short of unpredictable. Overnight temperatures in July dropped to as low as 5°C, creating conditions more reminiscent of early spring than midsummer. Even as recently as last night (July 31st), temperatures dipped to a chilly 6.5°C. These unseasonable temperatures have posed significant challenges for many warm-season crops. The wet conditions have created an ideal environment for slugs, which have been particularly voracious this year. Many gardeners have seen their carefully nurtured plants fall victim to these persistent pests. However, it’s important to remember that this is a widespread issue – gardens everywhere are grappling with similar challenges. Despite the challenges, there’s reason for optimism. As of July 31st, we’ve been enjoying a stretch of warm, sunny days, with promising forecasts for the week ahead. This presents an opportunity to appreciate the plants that have managed to thrive despite the odds and to prepare for the next phase of the growing season.
