Grow Large, Prize-Worthy Bulbs with Onion Exhibition Seeds

Onion Exhibition Seeds are a top choice for gardeners looking to grow impressively large, sweet, and versatile onions. Known for their smooth, golden-brown skins and firm, crisp texture, these onions are perfect for competitions, allotments, and home gardens. With the right care, they can grow up to 15 cm (6 inches) in diameter, offering both visual impact and excellent results.

Growing Conditions

Onion Exhibition Seeds grow best in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. They prefer a pH between 6.0 and 7.0 and need a sunny, sheltered location. Consistent watering is essential during dry spells, but avoid waterlogging, as this can cause rot. In the UK, onions are grown as annuals and should be started indoors early to allow a long growing season.

Planting Guide

  • Starting Indoors:
    • Sow seeds indoors from December to early February in seed trays filled with fine seed compost.
    • Lightly cover seeds with compost or vermiculite and water gently.
    • Place in a warm spot with temperatures between 18–21°C (65–70°F).
    • Seeds typically germinate within 10–14 days.
  • Transplanting:
    • Once seedlings have two true leaves, carefully transplant them into individual pots.
    • Gradually harden off plants by placing them outdoors for a few hours each day over 7–10 days before planting.
  • Planting Outdoors:
    • After the last frost, plant out seedlings into prepared beds, spacing 30 cm (12 inches) apart in rows 45 cm (18 inches) apart.
    • Add well-rotted manure or compost to improve fertility before planting.

Care & Maintenance

  • Watering:
    • Water regularly to keep soil moist, particularly during dry spells, but avoid overwatering to prevent rot.
  • Feeding:
    • Feed with a high-potash fertiliser every two weeks once the bulbs begin to swell for improved growth.
  • Weeding:
    • Remove weeds carefully to avoid damaging shallow roots.
  • Pests & Diseases:
    • Protect young plants from onion fly using fine netting or fleece.
    • Rotate crops yearly to reduce the risk of white rot and other soil-borne diseases.

Harvesting & Storage

  • Harvesting:
    • Onions are ready to harvest when the leaves turn yellow and start to fall over, typically in late summer.
    • Lift bulbs carefully using a fork and leave them to dry on the surface for a few days if the weather is dry.
  • Curing & Storage:
    • Move onions to a warm, airy place to dry for 2–3 weeks.
    • Once fully dried, trim roots and leaves, and store in a cool, dry location for several months
