Grow Delicious, High-Yielding Gherkins with Gherkin Adam F1 Seeds

Gherkin Adam F1 is an early-maturing variety that produces firm, crunchy fruits perfect for pickling or adding to salads. Its compact growth and excellent disease resistance make it an ideal choice for home gardeners. The dark green, uniform fruits grow to around 7–10 cm in length and are known for their smooth texture and reliable yields. Suitable for both greenhouse and outdoor growing, Gherkin Adam F1 is a versatile and dependable addition to any vegetable garden.

Growing Conditions

Gherkin Adam F1 grows best in sunny, sheltered spots with fertile, well-drained soil. It prefers a neutral pH and requires regular watering to maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging. Warm temperatures above 16°C are recommended for strong, healthy growth.

Planting Guide

  • Sowing Indoors:
    • Start seeds indoors from mid-April, 2–3 weeks before planting outside.
    • Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep in small pots or seed trays filled with compost.
    • Keep pots warm at 20°C (68°F). Seeds usually sprout within 10–14 days.
  • Transplanting:
    • Once seedlings have 2–3 true leaves and the risk of frost has passed (mid-May to June), harden them off by placing them outside for a few hours each day over 7–10 days.
    • Transplant seedlings 45 cm apart in rows 150 cm apart to allow for strong growth.
  • Direct Sowing Outdoors:
    • In warmer areas, sow seeds directly outdoors from mid-May when the soil has warmed up.
    • Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep, following the same spacing as transplants.

Care & Maintenance

  • Supporting Growth:
    • Train plants to climb trellises or supports to improve air circulation and make harvesting easier.
  • Feeding:
    • Feed every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season to encourage healthy growth.
  • Watering:
    • Water regularly, especially during dry weather, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged.
  • Weeding:
    • Remove weeds regularly to prevent competition for nutrients and moisture.
  • Pests & Diseases:
    • Watch out for aphids and cucumber beetles. Use protective netting if needed.
    • Ensure good airflow and avoid watering leaves to prevent powdery mildew.

Harvesting & Storage

  • Harvesting:
    • Pick fruits regularly, starting around 8–10 weeks after sowing, when they reach 7–10 cm long.
    • Regular harvesting encourages continuous fruiting throughout the season.
  • Storage:
    • Fresh gherkins can be stored in the fridge for up to a week.
    • Pickle the fruits for longer storage and a tangy flavour.
