Estima Seed Potatoes – A Heavy-Cropping Second Early

Estima is classed as a second early but behaves almost like an early maincrop, sizing up into large oval tubers with light yellow skin and matching flesh. The flavour is mild and the texture fluffy, which makes it a straightforward kitchen potato rather than a showy one. Its reputation rests on reliability: it crops heavily, it copes with less than perfect conditions, and it produces a high proportion of good-sized tubers. A sensible choice for a first serious potato bed.

Key Features:

  • Heavy Cropper: Produces a large yield of good-sized, uniform tubers.
  • Large Oval Tubers: Light yellow skin over light yellow flesh.
  • Fluffy Texture: Mild in flavour with a soft, fluffy texture once cooked.
  • Forgiving to Grow: Tolerant of imperfect soil and watering, which suits a new plot.

Planting and Growing:

  • Planting Time: Plant between April and May when the soil temperature reaches 8°C.
  • Sowing Depth: Plant 15cm deep, with 30cm between tubers and 60cm between rows.
  • Growing Tips: Water steadily as the tubers swell. Estima responds well to a good soaking in dry spells.

Harvesting:

  • Harvest Time: Lift from July through September, around 13-15 weeks after planting.

Culinary Uses:

  • Boiling: Cooks evenly and takes little watching.
  • Mash: The fluffy texture mashes smooth.
  • Baking: Large tubers bake well with a soft interior.

Why Choose Estima Seed Potatoes?

Estima is the dependable middle of the season: a big crop of even-sized potatoes that cook well and ask little of the grower. If you want one variety to fill the kitchen between the earlies and the maincrop, this is a safe choice.
