Organic Colleen Seed Potatoes – A Reliable Organic First Early

Colleen is an Irish-bred first early introduced in 1996 and a staple of organic growing ever since. It lifts medium, oval tubers with white skin and creamy flesh, firm enough to hold together on the plate and slow to discolour once cooked. What makes it a favourite with organic growers is its health: good resistance to tuber blight, common scab and the main potato viruses, which matters a great deal when nothing is being sprayed. It also keeps far better than most earlies.

Key Features:

  • Certified Organic: Organically grown seed, suited to organic and no-spray plots.
  • Good Disease Resistance: Resistant to tuber blight, common scab and the main potato viruses.
  • Firm, Creamy Flesh: White skin over creamy flesh that holds its shape and resists discolouring.
  • Stores Well: Keeps longer than most first earlies.

Planting and Growing:

  • Planting Time: Plant between March and April once the soil has begun to warm.
  • Sowing Depth: Plant 15cm deep, with 30cm between tubers and 60cm between rows.
  • Growing Tips: Chit before planting. Earth up regularly — worth doing properly on an organic plot, where covered tubers are the main defence against blight spores washing down.

Harvesting:

  • Harvest Time: Lift from June through August, around 10-12 weeks after planting.

Culinary Uses:

  • Boiling: Holds its shape and keeps its colour.
  • Roasting: Firm flesh that browns well without breaking up.
  • Salads: Good served warm while the tubers are still small.

Why Choose Organic Colleen Seed Potatoes?

Colleen is the organic grower’s first early: healthy, forgiving and productive without chemical support. The disease resistance does the work that spraying would otherwise do, and the crop keeps long enough to be worth storing rather than eating all at once. Supplied in a 1.5kg bag.
