Cucumber Femspot: Productive and Reliable Greenhouse Growing

Cucumber Femspot is a staple for many UK gardeners who value a straightforward and productive growing experience. This variety is specifically suited for indoor cultivation, where it produces an abundance of long, smooth-skinned fruits. One of its most appreciated traits is its “all-female” flowering habit; this means the plant focuses entirely on fruit production and avoids the pollination issues that can lead to bitter-tasting cucumbers.

Sowing and Early Care

To get the most out of your season, sow Femspot seeds from March to May. These plants appreciate a warm start, so a sunny windowsill or a heated propagator is ideal. Sow the seeds on their sides at a depth of 1cm in small pots. Once the seedlings have established their first “true” leaves and the weather has warmed, they can be transplanted into their final positions in the greenhouse border, large pots, or grow-bags.

Support and Maintenance

Femspot is a vigorous climber that makes excellent use of vertical space.

  • Training: Grow the plants up netting, sturdy canes, or strings. Pinching out the growing tip once it reaches the top of your support will encourage the plant to put its energy into the fruit.
  • Feeding and Watering: Cucumbers are thirsty plants. Keep the soil consistently moist and, once the first fruits appear, apply a high-potash liquid feed every two weeks to sustain the harvest into autumn.
  • Environment: On very hot days, splashing water on the greenhouse floor (damping down) creates the humid atmosphere these plants love, helping to keep the foliage lush and healthy.

Harvest and Kitchen Use

Expect to begin harvesting your cucumbers from July through to October. Regular picking is the key to a long season; the more you harvest, the more the plant is stimulated to produce. The fruits are at their best when they reach roughly 25cm to 30cm, offering a crisp texture and a very small seed cavity.

Femspot is the classic salad cucumber. Because the skin is thin and lacks the “spines” found on outdoor varieties, there is no need to peel it. It provides a refreshing, cool crunch to summer meals and remains a popular choice for those who enjoy making their own fresh tzatziki or chilled salads.

Resilience in the Garden

This variety is frequently noted for its robust nature. It carries excellent natural resistance to common greenhouse challenges like powdery mildew and scab. This resilience often allows Femspot to stay green and productive well into the late summer, even when other varieties might begin to struggle, ensuring you get the most value from your garden space.

The Grown Local Verdict “Gardeners across the UK frequently highlight Femspot for its ‘set and forget’ reliability. It is often described as a variety that takes the guesswork out of greenhouse cucumbers, particularly for those who find it difficult to keep up with removing male flowers. Its reputation for producing clean, sweet-tasting fruit from mid-summer right through to the first frosts makes it a very welcome addition to any vegetable plot.”
