What to Sow in November

November

As November unfolds, the garden begins to settle into a quieter rhythm, with cooler temperatures and shorter days signalling the onset of winter. This is the perfect time to prepare for the seasons ahead.

Now is an excellent opportunity to sow hardy varieties like broad beans, which will thrive over winter and provide an early harvest come summer. To protect your young plants from frost, consider using cloches or cold frames.

Veg to Sow this Month

Broad Beans

You can sow broad beans in October and November to overwinter for an earlier spring harvest, or plant them again in February and March for a later yield; planting them now in November allows the beans to establish over winter, leading to stronger plants and an earlier, successful harvest.

Garlic

Planting garlic anytime from September up to early spring allows the cloves to establish roots and begin growth before the warmer months arrive. Starting during this period ensures your garlic has ample time to mature, leading to a successful harvest that gardeners will appreciate.

Shallot

Shallot seeds are best sown from late winter to early spring, typically between December and April. Starting your seeds during this time allows the plants to establish themselves indoors or under cover before transplanting them outdoors when the weather warms up. By giving your shallots this early start, youโ€™ll ensure they have ample time to grow and mature.
