Grow Tomato Pork Chop – A True Yellow Heirloom with Outstanding Flavour

Tomato Pork Chop is a unique heirloom variety that stands out for its true yellow colouring, unlike many so-called yellow tomatoes that are actually orange. Bred by Wild Boar Farms, a breeder known for developing striking and flavourful tomatoes, Pork Chop delivers exceptional taste and reliable performance in the garden. The medium-sized, slightly flattened beefsteak fruits start off yellow with green stripes, ripening to a rich golden hue. With a sweet, citrusy flavour, this tomato is a fantastic choice for those looking to add something different to their homegrown produce.

Growing Tomato Pork Chop

Tomato Pork Chop is indeterminate, meaning it continues to grow and produce fruit throughout the season. For the best results, provide support such as stakes or a cage, and ensure plants receive plenty of sun and airflow to encourage healthy growth.

Sowing and Planting:

  • Sowing Indoors: Start seeds 6–8 weeks before the last frost. Sow 0.5 cm deep in seed compost and keep at a consistent temperature of 21–24°C for good germination.
  • Transplanting: Once seedlings have two sets of true leaves and the risk of frost has passed, harden them off before planting outdoors. Space plants 45–60 cm apart in well-drained soil enriched with compost.

Care and Maintenance:

  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, avoiding overwatering or allowing it to dry out completely. Water at the base to prevent fungal diseases.
  • Feeding: Use a balanced fertiliser at planting, then feed with a high-potassium fertiliser every few weeks once flowering begins.
  • Pruning: Remove lower leaves to improve airflow and pinch out side shoots for better fruit production.

Harvesting and Storage

Tomato Pork Chop reaches maturity in 75–85 days, producing medium-sized, golden yellow beefsteak tomatoes.

  • Harvesting: Pick when the fruits have fully ripened to a deep golden yellow and feel slightly soft to the touch.
  • Storage: Store at room temperature for the best flavour and texture. Avoid refrigerating, as this can dull the taste.

Culinary Uses

With its sweet, citrus-like flavour, Tomato Pork Chop is a fantastic addition to the kitchen. Enjoy it fresh in salads, sliced onto sandwiches, or added to summer salsas. It also roasts beautifully, bringing out its natural sweetness, and pairs well with fresh herbs and olive oil.
