Stuttgart Onion Sets – Traditional Golden Bulbs with Firm Texture and Long Storage
Onion Sets Stuttgart has been trusted by gardeners for generations thanks to its firm semi-flat bulbs wrapped in warm golden skin. The flesh holds a crisp bite and rich mild flavour which makes this variety ideal for both salads and cooking. These sets are Scottish-grown, delivering strong provenance and consistent quality that gives gardeners confidence.
Growing Conditions
Select a position in full sun with soil that is firm, fertile and well drained. Moderately fertile ground is best because freshly manured or overly rich soil can lead to soft growth and weaker bulbs. These hardy spring-planted onions establish quickly and mature through the summer into storage-worthy bulbs.
Planting Guide
Planting Time: March to April, as soon as the soil is workable and free of frost.
Depth and Spacing: Plant each set so the tip is just visible above soil level. Space 10 to 15 cm apart in rows spaced 30 to 45 cm.
Timing: Bulbs generally mature between July and September, depending on season and growing conditions.
Care and Maintenance
Keep the bed clean and free from weeds so the developing bulbs do not face competition. Water sparingly during establishment and reduce as tops begin to fall. Firm soil helps produce strong, well-formed bulbs.
As the foliage bends and turns yellow the bulbs are almost ready. Lift them gently and allow to dry in an airy place out of direct sunlight until the skins are thoroughly papery and the necks tight.
Harvesting and Storage
Harvest when foliage has collapsed and bulbs feel firm under the fingers. Cure the bulbs in a warm airy space for at least a week until the outer skins are dried. Store in a cool, dry, ventilated tray or mesh bag. Onion Sets Stuttgart are known for their excellent keeping qualities and will serve well through winter when stored correctly.
Uses
The firm texture means these onions hold together when cooked, sliced or roasted. The golden skin adds visual appeal to the kitchen harvest and the mild flavour works just as well raw in salads as it does caramelised or used for everyday dishes.
