Nicola Seed Potatoes – A Salad Variety Grown for Flavour

Nicola is a second early grown by people who care what a potato tastes like. The tubers are smooth, oval and neatly formed, with cream skin over pale yellow flesh, and the texture is firmly waxy so they hold together however they are cooked. What gets it planted year after year is the flavour — rich and unmistakably buttery, good enough that the usual advice is to do as little to it as possible. It also keeps well for a salad potato.

Key Features:

  • Buttery Flavour: One of the best-flavoured salad varieties available.
  • Firmly Waxy: Pale yellow flesh that holds its shape completely.
  • Well-Formed Tubers: Smooth, even ovals with cream skin and shallow eyes.
  • Keeps Well: Stores better than most second early salad varieties.

Planting and Growing:

  • Planting Time: Plant between April and May when the soil temperature reaches 8°C.
  • Sowing Depth: Plant 15cm deep, with 30cm between tubers and 60cm between rows.
  • Growing Tips: Water consistently as the tubers form to keep the skins smooth and prevent splitting.

Harvesting:

  • Harvest Time: Lift from July through September, around 13-15 weeks after planting.

Culinary Uses:

  • Boiling: Boil whole and serve with butter — the intended use.
  • Salads: Holds firm when cooled, taking dressing well.

Why Choose Nicola Seed Potatoes?

Nicola is the variety to grow if flavour is the point. It asks for nothing complicated in the kitchen and rewards a plain pot of boiling water better than most potatoes reward real effort.
