Sweet Pea Erewhon – Reverse Bicolour Scent from a Master Breeder
Sweet Pea Erewhon is a modern grandiflora type recognised for its unique reverse bicolour: soft pink-lavender standards above richer mauve-blue wings. The fragrance is full and classic, and each flower sits on a long, straight stem ideal for cutting. Bred by Dr Keith Hammett, a leading figure in sweet pea development, it blends historical scent with innovative colour in a way that truly stands out.
Growing Conditions
Choose full sun and moisture-retentive, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Provide early support using canes, netting or an obelisk. Good airflow helps keep foliage healthy and supports straighter stems for cutting.
Planting Guide
Sowing Indoors: Sow October to November, or January to March. Sow 2 cm deep into deep modules or pots at 15–18 °C. Germination usually takes 10–21 days.
Transplanting: Grow on cool and bright; pinch tips at 10–15 cm to encourage side shoots. Harden off carefully and plant out after the last frost.
Direct Sowing: From April once the soil has warmed, 2 cm deep where they are to flower.
Spacing: 20–30 cm between plants along supports for best stem presentation.
Care & Maintenance
Watering: Keep roots evenly moist, especially during dry spells.
Feeding: Apply a high-potash liquid feed every 7–10 days once buds appear.
Training: Tie in regularly; remove tendrils around cutting stems for straighter flowers.
Deadheading: Pick frequently to prolong flowering and maximise stem length through the season.
Flowering & Cut Flower Tips
Flowering typically runs June to September. Cut stems when the first flower opens for best vase life. Stand cut stems in cool water for conditioning before arranging.
Garden Impact
Erewhon’s airy habit blends effortlessly into borders, adding vertical movement without blocking views. Its unusual reverse bicolour attracts attention, while the scent and strong stems make it a favourite for bouquets, vases and sweet pea displays.
