Maris Piper Seed Potatoes – The UK’s Favourite All-Rounder

Maris Piper Seed Potatoes are one of the most well-known and trusted varieties across the UK, famous for their versatility in the kitchen and high yields in the garden. The oval-shaped tubers boast a smooth white skin and creamy-coloured flesh, delivering excellent texture and flavour. Whether you’re roasting, frying, mashing, or making chips, Maris Piper’s cooking qualities are unrivalled. They maintain their texture when cooked and rarely discolour, making them a go-to choice for consistent results. Additionally, Maris Piper potatoes store exceptionally well, ensuring you can enjoy them long after harvest.

Key Features:

  • Maincrop Variety: Plant from March to April and harvest 15-22 weeks later, around September to October.
  • Exceptional Cooking Qualities: Renowned for their light, fluffy texture, making them perfect for roasting, chipping, mashing, and boiling.
  • Long-Term Storage: With proper care, Maris Piper stores well, allowing you to use them throughout the winter months.
  • High Yields: Known for producing large crops, ideal for gardeners looking to maximize their harvest.

Planting and Growing:

Maris Piper thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of organic material. Plant the seed potatoes 15 cm deep and space them 30 cm apart with 70 cm between rows to give the plants plenty of room to grow. Regular earthing-up is essential to protect the developing tubers from light exposure and to enhance yield. These potatoes require consistent watering throughout the growing season, particularly when the tubers start to form during the flowering stage.

Harvesting and Use:

Harvest Maris Piper potatoes in September to October, once the foliage has died back. Leave them in the ground for 2-3 weeks to allow their skins to set, improving their storage potential. In the kitchen, Maris Piper is incredibly versatile:

  • Chipping: Perfect for making crispy, golden chips with a light, fluffy interior.
  • Roasting: Their creamy texture and light, crisp skin make Maris Piper ideal for roast potatoes.
  • Mashing: Produces a soft, smooth mash that’s perfect for accompanying a range of dishes.
  • Boiling: Maintains its shape and texture, making it a reliable choice for boiling and salads.

Maris Piper is a firm favourite among both gardeners and chefs, thanks to its versatility, high yield, and long storage capabilities. Its excellent frying and roasting qualities, combined with its ability to store well into the winter, make it a staple for homegrown produce lovers across the UK.
