Growing Instructions for Ambrosia Sweetcorn Seeds
Unlock the sweetest summer corn with these simple steps:
Sowing
- Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow outdoors when soil reaches 12°C (54°F).
- For indoor sowing: Use individual 3″ pots, sow one seed per pot at 1/2″ depth. Maintain soil temperature around 18°C (65°F).
- For direct sowing: Sow seeds 2cm deep in blocks of 3-4, spaced 40cm apart. Thin to the strongest seedling per block.
Planting Out
- Harden off seedlings gradually before transplanting outdoors after the last frost.
- Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Amend with compost if needed.
Care
- Water regularly, especially during dry spells, keeping soil moist but not soggy.
- Provide support for tall stalks with bamboo canes or netting.
- Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Fertilize with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks.
Harvesting
- Harvest cobs when kernels are plump and bright yellow, and silks have turned brown and dry.
- Test for sweetness by pinching back a kernel – milky juice indicates perfection!
- Cut stalks just below the cob with a sharp knife. Enjoy fresh or store in the refrigerator for up to a week.
