Salvia Estrella Coral – Coral Rose Spikes, Exceptional Habit

Salvia Estrella Coral is a new variety of Salvia splendens characterised by coral-rose flower spikes set atop a taller, more vigorous branching habit than typical splendens types. The variety achieved a prestigious Gold Medal from the trials programme thanks to its innovation in colour and form.

Growing Conditions

This variety thrives with full sun and free-draining, fertile soil. Its tall, well-branched growth means it enjoys a situation with good light and airflow so the flower spikes develop fully.

Planting Guide

Sowing Indoors: Sow from February to April on the surface of moist seed compost, barely covering the seeds, at about 18–21 °C.
Transplanting: Move seedlings into larger containers when they have true leaves; plant outdoors after all risk of frost has passed.
Direct Sowing: This is mainly grown as a half-hardy annual from seed indoors rather than direct sowing outdoors.

Care & Maintenance

Water regularly during establishment, then maintain moderate moisture levels; avoid waterlogging. A light mulch will help stabilise moisture and reduce stress during warm spells. Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser early in the season to support the vigorous growth. Remove any spent flower spikes to help prolong the flowering period.

Flowering & Cut Flower Tips

Expect flower spikes from about June through to the first frosts in favourable conditions. The coral-rose spikes are excellent for picking: harvest when the blooms are fully open, and they make striking display stems in informal arrangements.

Garden Impact

With its bold coral-rose colouring and upright habit, Salvia Estrella Coral stands out in mixed borders or among foliage plants. Its well-branched growth and dense spike production make it ideal for introducing height and structure. Pollinators are naturally drawn to its flowers, so it also supports garden biodiversity.
