Growing Helianthus Tall Single
Helianthus Tall Single is a fast-growing Sunflower, hardy annual that thrives in full sun and moderately fertile, humus-rich soil. Its tall stems can grow over 2m high, bearing large, bright yellow flowerheads with dark centres that attract a variety of birds and pollinators.
Sowing and Planting
Sow seeds indoors in late winter, 5cm deep in deep pots or root trainers filled with good seed compost. When large enough to handle, plant outside in spring after gradually hardening off. Alternatively, sow directly into a well-prepared seed bed in spring and thin to 30cm as they grow.
Garden Care
Keep the soil consistently moist but well-drained, and fertilize regularly for optimal growth. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms and prevent self-seeding.
Wildlife Friendly
Helianthus Tall Single is an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens, as its seeds are loved by many different kinds of birds. The plants are also a valuable source of nectar and pollen for pollinators, earning the RHS Plants for Pollinators mark.
Growing in Containers
Where space is limited, Helianthus Tall Single can be grown in large pots, provided they are kept well fed and watered. Use a good quality potting compost and a container that is at least 30cm deep to accommodate the taproot.
